I'm very excited to be heading to more continuing education this weekend! There are always new and exciting things to see and learn during education seminars!
Did you know... What happens to our skin in the sun, happens to the eyes as well, and our eye is about 10x more sensitive to the sun! At a recent education seminar I attended we learned about UV light and the damage it can cause, but also about exposure to High Energy Visible Light / HEV (exposure to blue light.) The potential danger with HEV is that it penetrates deep into the eye, which can cause retinal damage.
So, your next question may be...'Are you telling me to stay out of the sun?' My answer is no way! The sun can be very good for us, as long as we protect ourselves properly. When deciding on your next pair of sunglasses, keep in mind, the amount of UV protection your sunglasses provide is unrelated to the color and darkness of the lenses. But for HEV protection, color does matter. Most sun lenses that block a significant amount of blue light will be bronze, copper or reddish-brown.
